Why Sheryl Sandberg personalizes notes and how it can help

Why Sheryl Sandberg personalizes notes and how it can helpWhy Sheryl Sandberg personalizes notes and how it can helpMeeting one-on-one with your manager is a special time for employees to feel personally and professionally supported. Its where relationships can be won or lost. Employees with supportive bosses who take the time to make employees feel heard are the ones that feel more valued by their employer and are less likely to leave. Its why making time to meet about employees progress is so important. You want to address issues before they become bigger problems, and you want to do it in a space that gives employees your full attention. But when you manage a large team, it gets harder to keep track of your employees shifting moods and needs on a regular basis. If you need advice on how to do it right, take it from Sheryl Sandberg. How to use note-taking to your advantage in aone-on-oneIn a Wall Street Journal profile on how the embattled Facebook COO is moving forward in the wake o f the Cambridge Analyticas privacy scandal, Sandbergs forthright management style welches highlighted as a plus from those who have worked with her.David Fischer, Facebooks vice president for business and marketing partnerships, told the Journal that in their two decades of working together, she has gone through I dont know how many thousands of these little notebooks that fit nicely in the palm of your hand, he said. She has lists for each person as well as herself so when I go in and have my one-on-one with her later today, she will flip to my name and there will be a platzplatzset of issues. Its effective.By regularly documenting her interactions with each of her employees, Sandberg signals that she is taking their concerns seriously. And by doing it regularly, she has more data to analyze. Notes of what happened at the moment when you discussed X and Y are going to be more effective than you remembering that same interaction a month later. This detailed recall is why note-taking is a habit that is extolled by business experts and former FBI officials. It forces you to pay attention beyond what was said and can let you document body language and tone while the memory is fresh. And the act of writing it down may help you more than you typing it up because longhand notes allow us to recall more complex information than typed-up notes. The biggest benefit of these notes is that it holds both parties accountable. Meetings do not matter if nothing gets done. Notes are written proof of what is working and what is not. By documenting a set of issues for each of her employees, Sandberg is showing her commitment to keeping up with their progress. Thats the goal of the one-on-one. Doc Norton, software consultant expert, emails action items after one-on-ones so everyone is on the same page as to what was discussed and agreed upon.Ultimately nothing is more important than ensuring your employees growth, he wrote. As you start the next session, you should have at least an update, if not a resolve on each of your action items. This consistent show of commitment builds trust and ensures growth for the employee.

How TV News Has Evolved in the Past 50 Years

How TV News Has Evolved in the Past 50 Years How TV News Has Evolved in the Past 50 Years Turn on the 6:00 newscast any time during the past 50 years, and youre likely to find coverage of house fires, court cases, and political races. But beyond the headlines, TV news history is filled with many changes. Below, well chart the evolution of broadcasting by taking a look at TV news history over the past 50 years to decide whether all the new equipment and ways of presenting the news truly make for a better broadcast. TV News History in the 1960s In the old black-and-white days of television, those who worked in TV news usually had backgrounds in radio or newspapers. A television news broadcast was hampered because it didnt have the reputation of newspaper journalism, nor was it able to compete with live, on-the-scene reporting of radio due to the lack of portable equipment. But TV news grew up quickly with the Kennedy assassination. That event was so significant. Its one of the 12 events that changed TV news coverage forever. TV news executives had to figure out a way to get live video, film, still photographs, any image, from the scene in Dallas, Texas, to the network studios to be transmitted to the nation. The customary practice of having a newsman (there were no women) simply reading a script on camera from New York or Washington wouldnt be enough. That event showed people at the networks and at affiliate stations throughout the country that TV news history would be made through pictures and video. That seems obvious today, but 50 years ago, there was no easy way to produce television from the scene of news events. Stories from the Vietnam War were days old before they reached American living rooms. Live coverage of parades or other planned events took large trucks and cameras that had to be set up hours ahead of time. Satellites werent around to send video around the world in an instant. TV News History in the 1970s A new decade brought many breakthroughs to television news. Viewers were seeing people other than white men delivering their news as stations and networks added women and people of other races to their staffs. Barbara Walters made TV news history when she joined Harry Reasoner at ABC to become the first woman to co-anchor a network newscast. For local stations, a trend began to have news teams presenting the news, rather than just a man behind a simple desk. In the age of color TV, a lot of money was spent on anchor desks, news music, logo design, and news promotion. Show business started having an influence on the news at both the local and national levels. Consultants were often hired to conduct market research. The focus shifted to bringing people information they wanted to see, versus what they needed to know. Thats one reason local TV newscasts started looking the same, regardless of whether you were watching in Denver, Dallas or Detroit. Based on research, stations decided their anchor teams needed to be warm, friendly and funny, which began an era that some call happy talk. The banter between team members became critical in developing a relationship with the viewers, so the anchorman poking fun at the weathermans necktie was encouraged to lighten up the show. During this decade, videotape began replacing film, which made it easier to get images on the air faster. Also, live microwave trucks allowed local stations to go live from the scene at a moments notice. Some stations covered ribbon cuttings, and other light news events live, to show they could and to justify the expense of purchasing this gear. TV News History in the 1980s The 1980s also reflected how TV news consulting firms changed TV news history. They convinced network and station executives that there was more to present than just typical news, weather, and sports. News organizations sought to make viewers lives better. That included health and consumer reporting to help people live longer and save money. No longer were newscasts dependent on the days events for content. These reports, called franchises, were usually heavily promoted as a way to differentiate a newscast from the competition. Critics usually blast local stations for putting style over substance, but that charge can also be made at the network level. When the iconic Walter Cronkite retired from anchoring the CBS Evening News in 1981, he was replaced by Dan Rather, who was known for his hard-hitting reports on the networks 60 Minutes program. There was a period that Rather began wearing sweaters on the air under his suit jacket, some say to warm up his persona. This decade saw the introduction of computers to many newsrooms, which made everything from finding archived stories to the mayors home phone number easier. Networks and some stations even added satellite newsgathering trucks, which allowed them to drive across country to beam back news reports. As with the introduction of microwave trucks in the 1970s, stations looked for any reason to use this equipment, even driving hundreds of miles to cover hurricanes that didnt threaten their local coverage area. TV News History in the 1990s For the networks, the 1990s were the years of the newsmagazine. While viewers were already familiar with 60 Minutes and ABCs 20/20, other similar shows started popping up on network schedules as a cheaper alternative to scripted entertainment programming. ABCs Primetime Live (which premiered in late-1989), NBCs Dateline NBC and CBSs Eye to Eye with Connie Chung are just a few examples from this period. Many of the newsmagazines fought to make names for themselves by turning to investigative reporting, which produced controversy. Dateline NBC was forced to apologize after airing an inaccurate report on alleged pickup truck fires. ABCs Primetime Live took heat for the way it reported a story about a supermarket chains food-handling practices. Some local stations turned away from the family-oriented health and consumer reporting to hard-hitting, tabloid-style investigations. Logos were designed to be bigger, bolder to attract the attention of viewers, who now had dramatically more programs to watch other than newscasts thanks to cable TV. President Bill Clintons sex scandal involving Monica Lewinsky was a story tailor-made for this period. Still, most newscasters cringed at having to repeat the details that nearly brought down the president. With the Internet starting to become a part of Americans homes, news organizations developed their first email systems and websites to communicate with the public in a new way. They didnt know then about the computer revolution that would challenge their dominance as news providers. TV News History in the 2000s Market research and technology took a back seat to old-fashioned reporting during the 2000s, because of two events: the presidential election of 2000 and the 9/11 terrorist attacks of 2001. Suddenly, anchor set design and sex scandal coverage became trivial. The 2000 U.S. Presidential election was not a made-for-tv event like a space shuttle launch or a hurricane, yet television executives had no choice but to cover it. The mundane collection and recounting of Florida ballots may not have made for captivating programming, but the future of the presidency was at stake. TV news helped Americans understand the Electoral College and other long-forgotten aspects of our election system. The 9/11 terrorist attacks by themselves changed TV news in ways that could not have been predicted. Anchors found themselves having to simultaneously report the bad news while trying to provide some reassurance to the viewers. Newsrooms that heard about rumors of further terrorist action had to decide whether they should report what they knew or wait to get the facts. Website development allowed video stories to be posted easily, which presented its dilemma. News organizations had to choose whether to put stories on the Internet immediately to beat their competitors or hold off until after their on-air broadcasts so that their viewership didnt suffer. TV News History in the 2010s This decade has brought so many technological changes that its hard to determine what viewers want from a TV newscast. There are so many choices in where to get information that sitting down to watch the 6:00 p.m. news is rapidly becoming a habit of generations past with little relevance to todays news consumers. TV newsrooms are changing their priorities to become information providers across a variety of platforms. Websites are only part of the delivery system. Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media have become important ways to reach potential viewers where theyre hanging out. Mobile devices, from cell phones to tablet computers, are forcing strategy to be developed to reach people on the go. Its easy to assume that traditional TV news wont survive much longer. But the successful stations and networks can boost their odds of being around through the decades by focusing on what has gotten them to this point, solid, accurate reporting that isnt influenced by outside sources, creative visual presentations, and credible TV personalities who form long-lasting relationships with their audiences.

How 5 brides stayed focused at work while wedding planning

How 5 brides stayed focused at work while wedding planning How 5 brides stayed focused at work while wedding planning The rush that comes with getting promoted, landed a gig you lusted after or finally taking that pivotal step toward entrepreneurism makes your heart race. But, that giddy nervousness can be compared to a different type of butterflies-in-your-stomach feeling: getting engaged. Lots of folks compare dating to building a career - both are ripe with faceplants and heartache, after all - so when you finally agree to a lifetime with someone whose company you not only enjoy, but adore, it is a big moment.   And while the path to the dream job and the dream person is quite similar, they start to become incompatible as you start your wedding planning. Ask anyone who has balanced nuptial duties with a full-time gig and they’ll be quick to admit the stress of the period. You definitely don’t want to lose your job as you gain a spouse, so take these tips from brides who have been there, as they share how they remained focused during this happy - and busy - time:“I set deliverables for ea ch month, week and day.”Entrepreneur and wedding planner Maya Devassy Tarach knew plenty about the industry already when it was her turn to get hitched in September of 2016. Thanks to her background in project management, she quickly went into task-setting mode to keep herself focused by organizing set deliverables for each month. With a big event or any type of work responsibility, this method allows you to be more holistic about your approach, rather than doubling-over when you see a mounting list of to-do items. At the start of each month, Tarach broke down that month’s list further into wedding planning tasks that needed to be accomplished in the week and categorized which ones were the most important, as well as which ones would be more time-consuming.Then, she went even deeper: giving herself daily duties so she wouldn’t feel overwhelmed, and could gradually complete her wedding work. When she knew exactly what she had to complete every 24 hours, she could rattle it off a nd get back to her business.“I found that my lunch hour and commutes to work were the best times to send batches of emails to vendors and research wedding details. It was amazing how much I could accomplish in a short amount of time because I already had a pre-made list ready of what planning tasks I needed to complete in the day,” she explains.“I didn’t multi-task.”When you’re sitting in- yet another- meeting where your input isn’t needed, and you have 10 emails from wedding vendors hanging out in your inbox, it is tempting to multi-task. Senior associate at A Wordsmith PR, Marketing Communications Savanna Frimoth says to resist. When she was planning throughout 2017 in prep for her big day on New Year’s Eve 2017, she tried her best to completely separate work- and wedding. If not only for her productivity but her sanity.“By focusing on the task at hand I was able to worry less about my lengthy personal to-do list. While there were times that wedding to-dos crept into my workday, I tried to avoid overlap and kept most things outside of work hours,” she shared. To effectively achieve this, considering her attention was given to her job eight hours a day, she let go of the control and delegated tasks, so the burden wasn’t resting on her bride-to-be shoulders. After all, it takes two - and an army -  to wed.“My fiancé took care of all the food, researched servers and bartenders, found the best places to purchase alcohol, and booked everything for the honeymoon which made a huge difference,” she shared.“We picked a few must-haves â€" and let the rest work out.”While, sure, getting through the nitty-gritty bookings is actual work, much of the chaos that comes from wedding planning is obsessing over little details. For youth minister Jenn Barlow, who married her number one in October of 2014, being flexible was helpful to retain balance. While she was wedding planning, she worked full-time in banking insurance and part-time in youth ministry, while her husband logged away hours as a professor. This only gave them a few hours on Saturday to plan their ceremony. So they came to an agreement: they’d set two to three must-haves, and the rest, they’d figure out on the way. After all, to them, their careers and their time together (not talking about their wedding) was more important than the absolute perfect day.“We knew we wanted to get married in our church with our priest, we wanted a good photographer, and we wanted a good DJ to set the mood, so we focused on finding and securing those first,” she shared. This allowed them to be more creative with other tasks, like making it a competition to address the envelopes and spend more quality time together, while still performing their best at their gigs.“I lived by my color-coded calendar.”When owner, principal, and coordinator Sarah Schmirl was planning her June 2012 wedding, she was working as a case manager. Considering she was already overworked, time ma nagement became the most difficult skill to master. Because she wanted to remain diligent at work - and also have the day she fantasized about - she decided to separate the two, via her calendar. And she asked for a bit of leeway with her employer.“I color coded and used block scheduling to work on daily tasks and the extra projects. I adjusted my hours to work flexible schedules which were a business need and allowed me some time during the morning to work on weddings and I kept my planning during actual working hours to a minimum by just devoting my lunch break,” she explained.“I made the most out of lists.”A few months ago, Kristin Lisi Buehler became a Mrs. - all while keeping a busy gig as a publicist at an agency. Since her job is all about managing many details, deadlines and actionable items, she already knew what to expect out of planning a massive event to celebrate her marriage. Throughout the wedding planning period, she said her brain was working on overload, to the point where her now-husband forbad her from doing any tasks an hour before bedtime. What made a difference to help her stay on track, perform her duties and ahem, not lose her mind were spreadsheets and lists.“From a budget spreadsheet, to vendor contact info, and even one with all the items we ordered and their respective tracking numbers/shipping statuses, I knew I could easily reference anything I needed, at any given moment,” she shared. “Having everything laid out also helped ensure we weren’t forgetting anything - especially the small things!”

How to Get the Most Out of Your Meetings

How to Get the Most Out of Your Meetings How to Get the Most Out of Your Meetings Gathering your team in one place to brainstorm new ideas or disseminate information seems like a good idea in theory. In practice, however, meetings  are often nothing more than a waste of time. Employees are easily distracted - and for good reason. They may be thinking  about the work they had to put on hold while they sit at the table. If workers are staring blankly at walls or not-so-discretely checking their phones, the problem isnt their behavior - its your inability to hold their attention. As many as 38 percent of employees admit to daydreaming during meetings and conference calls, according to recent research conducted by Klaxoon.  While some may argue companies simply have too darn many meetings for their own good, Klaxoons research suggests the culprits arent frequency or length. Rather, the key is simply running the meeting efficiently. Well-run, efficient meetings are certainly a boost to productivity and are integral to the day-to-day of high-performing teams, says Matthieu Bucher, CEO of Klaxoon. They are a place where [people] share information and knowledge, build consensus, and make decisions. Oh No - Not Another Meeting If your meetings are rarely productive, that can have a significant impact on employee happiness and productivity, especially in busy offices where every minute counts. Twenty-two percent of respondents to the Klaxoon survey reported that most of their office meetings were a waste of time. What makes these meetings wastes of time? Generally, Bucher says, its one of two factors: Meeting goals are never clearly established, leading to a lack of focus or  frequent digressions away from the most pressing topics. Participation is limited, and people are either not motivated to engage or feel they cant actively take part in the decision-making process. To combat this, every meeting should have a set agenda and a strong facilitator to keep things on topic and ensure no one individual dominates discussions, Bucher says. Activities such as quizzes and group brainstorms can [also] make meetings more successful. If every participant can easily share their ideas and have a say, you see a drastic change in team and meeting engagement. If your meeting gives workers any opportunity to check out,  rest  assured they will do exactly that. One of the main distractors is the fact employees bring their own devices to meetings and will use these to ease boredom or fill the void if they do not feel included, Bucher notes. One easy way around this is to incorporate employees devices into the meetings. For example, you could design  in-meeting activities that employees access via their mobile devices and laptops. The Benefits of Collaboration If employees feel that their opinion isnt valued or that it isnt their place to speak up in a meeting, they will withdraw and focus on other things. The best way to get full participation is to create an environment where all participants truly have a voice Your employees want to collaborate. In fact, 57 percent of the people surveyed by Klaxoon said collaboration is integral to their success at work. Among millennials, that figure is even higher at 64 percent. Its easy to turn meetings into productive, efficient uses of time when you actively include employees - because thats something they already want to be doing. Meetings that bring together diverse employee populations can also help to break down walls between departments, driving increased collaboration across the organization. Effective meetings help to break down silos, guaranteeing a fluid flow of bottom-up information that permeates throughout teams all across an organization, Bucher says. Collaborating efficiently in meetings just leads to great teamwork. Employees will be happier, more productive, and more  focused when they are asked to participate in meetings and other gatherings. Building a collaborative culture at your company is the first step toward meeting success.

This is how to worry productively

This is how to worry productively This is how to worry productively Don’t be such a worrywart, well-meaning career advice experts will tell you. They want you to worry less, or better yet not at all.But that’s an impossibility. Despite all your best efforts to stay zen, there will be moments in your career where anxiety will strike and you’ll feel the heat of pressure. These thoughts are normal, and can even be motivating if you learn how to not let these anxieties overwhelm you. Here’s the science of how to manage your inner worrywart and use it as a productive force for good.1) Schedule worry timeWorrying about how you’re going to ace the interview can a productive mind exercise during the day, not the night before the big interview when you need to get sleep.Instead of blaming and shaming yourself for having any anxiety at all - feelings that will only make you feel worse according to cognitive behavioral therapy principles - one study in Behavior Modification suggests redirecting these feelings and scheduling time during the day to do it. The researchers found that anxious participants who were told to focus their worries at a specific time and location over the day showed significant decreases in their overall anxiety and insomnia.Researchers believe scheduling worry time works because it teaches you to identify what’s a worrisome thought in the first place. The act of reviewing your unpleasant thoughts shows you that these thoughts are just thoughts and not your permanent reality. When you’re worrying at scheduled times, you’re breaking the association that your bedroom is where your worries hide at night, so you’re able to sleep more. And when you know you’re going to get worry time later in the day, you can focus on the present moment.2) Write your worries downOne study found that one of the best ways to prepare for the stress in a high-pressure event is to write about it. A University of Chicago study found that worried students who were told to write about their worries and fears about an exam prio r to taking it saw a boost in their test-taking performance. In fact, people who journaled their worries overall got better grades on the test than those who didn’t.“It might be counterintuitive, but it’s almost as if you empty the fears out of your mind,” University of Chicago professor, Sian Beilock, who led the writing test experiment, said. “You reassess that situation so that you’re not as likely to worry about those situations because you’ve slain that beast.”The act of writing is useful because it gives your fears names, and puts them in perspective. Neuroscience research has found that labelling emotions helps us reduce the power these emotions have over us.  Describing your emotions activates the prefrontal cortex in our brains, which in turn, reduces the arousal in the limbic system. To sum upTo conquer your worries, in other words, you first have to acknowledge that you have worries. Once you learn how your anxiety operates, you’re able to break the paraly zing hold these thoughts have over you.

How Per Diems for Music Tours Work

How Per Diems for Music Tours Work How Per Diems for Music Tours Work A per diem, or P.D. for short, literally means per day. Its the daily expense money payments for a touring band. The idea itself is uncomplicated, but the details of these payments reveal significant differences in the amounts paid and what they cover and, sometimes in whether the band members ever get them. Per Diem Payments in the Music Business The music business employs large numbers of highly-qualified itinerant workers. If youre soon to be one of them, you probably have some questions. Musicians whove spent most of their lives on the road can tell you stories about incredibly caring management and band-leaders, and even more, about touring experiences, they wish theyd never had. A lot of the  bad stuff happens because musicians didnt ask essential questions before they went out on the gig. P.D.s are paid to each band member and almost always to members of the crew to cover basic personal expenses while on tour. So far, so good. But P.D.s can vary dramatically depending on how much money the tour has behind it, the attitude of the bands frontman, and, equally, the character of the bands management. If You Dont Know, Ask Often that first touring gig is a big step up. You may have been putting together arrangements for low budget local radio commercials one week and the next week Mr. Big, who happened to see you playing for little money in a local club, has decided youd be the perfect addition to his national tour. Theres a history of this in music, and often the narrative includes a cryptic comment from Mr. Big as hes leaving the club: Here, call this number. The next thing you know Mr. Bigs management has asked you to drop by the office where itll become official: Mr. Big wants you to join the band. It is seldom perceived by most musicians at this point in their careers as the best time to ask penetrating questions about money, among them: What does it pay? It is perhaps the one question you dont need to ask - the bands manager will normally tell you that. The rest of the questions on this list, however, may or may not be brought up and answered voluntarily by managers. If not, scary as it sounds, these are the questions you need to ask before you accept the gig, not after: How often will we be paid?Whos paying my cartage?Whats the per diem amount? What does the per diem include and, just as important; Is my hotel room paid in addition to the per diem or is it a part of the per diem payment? No Blood From Turnips Sometimes that first touring gig wont be with Mr. Bigs band; it may be with a band led by a musician, like yourself, who hopes to be Mr. Big someday - but presently is not. If thats the case, per diem payments may be small. Your hotel room costs might come out of the per diem payment. Back in the crazy 1970s, one musician I know found out after hed joined the band on the road that there were no per diem payments at all. As it turned out, that band was losing money, and the bandleader was making up the difference out of his substantial music publishing income, so the absence of the per diem, if not entirely wonderful, was at least understandable. In such cases, you have to take a deep breath and assess the situation. If the band is playing small clubs, inadequate per diems are more likely than not. And really, what can anyone do about that? As the saying goes, you cant squeeze blood out of a turnip. But where the tour is with an established act or a rising star - be sure to ask the questions about per diem before  you accept that gig - no matter how much you want it. If nothing about per diem has been mentioned before youre on the road, its likely that when you finally get the news about it, it wont be good.

One Time You Should NOT Accept a Counteroffer

One Time You Should NOT Accept a Counteroffer One Time You Should NOT Accept a Counteroffer Congratulations! You received a job  offer  from a new employer and submitted your resignation to human resources. While it is exciting to embark on a new and clear path in your career, things may get murky if your current employer makes a  counteroffer. This may include a higher salary or better perks to convince you to stay.   It may be easy to accept that  counteroffer. You are already acclimated to your current role, you collaborate well with your colleagues and you’re generally comfortable. Change is scary anyway, right? Well, think twice before saying yes. There are several reasons why you should stick with your initial decision to move on . Remember   why  you were job searching in the first place. You clearly were unhappy with your current situation, or you would not have entertained the idea of meeting with potential employers. Think about why you considered moving on. Was your current benefits package not quite “beneficial?” Is the company culture too rigid, or does it lack the flexibility you prefer? Have you plateaued in your role and see no path for continued professional growth? Accepting a  counteroffer  will not eliminate these factors. In a few weeks, the same issues that drove you away the first time will inevitably resurface.   Don’t be seduced by the bigger paycheck. While salary may be a factor in your decision to leave, employers often think a higher salary will convince team members to stay. But think about the intentions behind that negotiation. Your employer was previously able but unwilling to pay what you were worth â€" so they clearly did not value you. Why now â€" when you’re leaving â€" did this money suddenly appear in their budget? Getting the salary you deserve shouldn’t require you having the upper hand in the conversation. Even if your current employer convinces you to stay, there will always be a dark cloud hanging over your head. Management will perceive you as a flight risk. They may have convinced you to stay now, but how can they be sure this same conversation won’t happen again in six months? Remember, they worry about the company’s best interest, not yours. Your company may even start recruiting or grooming someone else to potentially replace you out of fear you can jump ship at any time. Even worse, they may begin to edge you out because they may feel they cannot depend on you. When turning down a counteroffer directly to your soon-to-be former boss just stay strong in your resolve and say something along the lines of “I appreciate the opportunity you have given me and my time at this company, but I truly feel it is time to step away and move onto the next chapter.”     It’s easy to be swayed to stay at your current job by a competitive  counteroffer . Submitting your resignation will have both positive and negative consequences. But remember that you have several logical reasons for leaving. Stand your ground. A good employer will respect your choice, and you both can part ways amicably.  Amanda Davis is the director of business operations at   Vaco Memphis .
